April 2, 2011
The Detroit Tigers got their first win of the season by defeating the New York Yankees 12-11 today. Detroit got off to a very commanding start in the game and led 9-2 after 2 innings. But the Yankees battled back and by the 9th inning Detroit's lead had been whittled down to 1.
Brett Gardner had walked leading off the bottom of the 9th before Jose Valverde was brought in to try to close out the game. Gardner stole 2nd and 3rd, so NY had the tying run on 3rd. But Valverde was able to get the last out, preserving the Tigers first win this season.
