2011 AL Game: Det. @ NY

 March 31, 2011

The Detroit Tigers opened the 2011 season on the road in NY. Justin Verlander got the start for Detroit and C. C. Sabathia started for the Yankees. NY got out to an early lead in the game on two 2-run homers. One by Mark Texiera in the 1st and one from Robinson Cano in the 4th. The Tigers battled back though, scoring 2 runs in the 7th and 1 in the 8th before losing the contest 4-3.
Detroit out-hit NY 8-4 and Verlander went the distance, but 2 of those hits were the Tiger's undoing.

The New York (AL) Yankees and the Detroit Tigers locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Yankee Stadium. The final score was the New York (AL)
Yankees 4, the Detroit Tigers 3.

New York (AL) drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first
inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Mark
Teixeira who made the crowd come alive when he cracked a two-run shot.
Detroit made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed
runs across.

The win was credited to C C Sabathia(1-0) who went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing
2 runs. Mariano Rivera earned the save, his 1st. Justin Verlander(0-1) took
the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered just 4 hits and 2 walks.

Jim Leyland was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's
nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'
As stated in the heading, I'm replaying this 2011 SOM baseball season concurrently with my 1973 replay. I'll be managing the Detroit Tigers who had a very good season.
Detroit went 95-67, winning the AL Central by a large margin. They defeated the New York Yankees in the AL Division Series before losing in the AL Championship Series to the Texas Rangers. I'll try to improve on their actual season results.
